Memorial services for John Erwin Thoren, 59, Eudora, KS, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.  He died July 30, 2010 at his farm near Eudora.

He was born September 11, 1950 in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Howard and Jane (Hadl) Thoren.

John was a lifelong resident of Eudora, where he farmed, raised cattle, was a Grade A Dairy Farmer, and was the business owner of Thoren Trucking for the past 15 years.  As a child, he attended Eudora Schools and was a 1968 graduate of Lawrence High School. He was involved in 4-H, FFA and received the FFA Future Farmer of the year award in 1968.  John was also recognized as a Kansas All-State Basketball player at Lawrence High School in 1968.

He married Wendy Milett in 1970 and they had two children.  He operated the family farm in western Kansas from 1975-1980.  He returned to Eudora and resumed farming until he started his trucking business.

John’s hobbies that he enjoyed most were: gardening, camping, his love for animals, along with his family and friends.  He enjoyed vacationing in the Wyoming and Colorado mountains, and he enjoyed attending his son’s football games at LHS, KU and Baker.  He loved watching the Kansas Jayhawks and especially enjoyed his granddaughters and his dog, Scooby.

He is survived by his daughter, Candi Cormaney (husband, Wade) of Lawrence, KS; his son, Jason Thoren of Eudora, KS; two sisters, Laura Broers and Betty Thoren both of Eudora;  two granddaughters, Ava and Elle Cormaney. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Herb and a nephew, Jim Hazlett.

The family suggests memorials in his name to American Heart Association or to Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.    A memorial fund will also be established through Baldwin State Bank.

I live in Ohio and just learned of John’s passing. I wish to say to John’s family that John was a wonderfully fun and friendly person who seemed to get along with everyone in high school. I will always remember his smooth left-handed shot on the basketball floor, our talks before and after games, and how he loved his gold Camaro. Everyone liked John. He was a first-class person’s in everyone’s eyes.
