Memorial services for George G. “Gerry” Hammond, 86, Lawrence will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Unity Church of Lawrence. He died March 26, 2011 at his home.
Gerry was born April 27, 1924 in Edinburgh, Scotland the son of Gerald and Louise Hammond. During World War II he served with the British Second Independent Parachute Brigade in North Africa, Italy, France, and Greece.
Later he worked in London, England with major tour operators and in 1953 came to Kansas City, Missouri to join the late Tom Maupin in what was then Reddy Travel Service. In 1958, he located to Lawrence to again join Tom Maupin in what was to later become Maupintour, operating escorted tours worldwide. After many years as Vice President of planning and operations of the Escorted Tours Division, he retired in 1992.
He married Julie Harnar, daughter of Paul and Jean Harnar, Lawrence on August 25, 1962. She survives, of the home. He is survived by three sons, Andrew and wife Felinda Hammond, Lawrence; Jason Hammond, Lawrence; and Gerald Ian Hammond, Mexico City. He is also survived by two granddaughters, a grandson, three nieces and a nephew.
The family suggests memorials in his name to Salvation Army or to Grace Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
To Julie and Drew and Jason: So sorry to hear of your loss. I have nothing but fond memories of Gerry and your family. I’ll be praying for God’s comfort and peace for all of you during this time.

Julie, Drew, and Jason,
I am saddened to hear Jerry has passed away.
I have many memories of Jerry and our weekends together, but mostly it was Jerry’s ever positive attitude about life, his constant sense of humor, and his brilliant Sunday dinners that I remember the most.
Always in the kitchen. Always something brilliant.
And it was that love of the Sunday dinner with everyone together that helped me understand and appreciate the importance of family, love, and friendship.
This I have never forget.
And,I expect Jerry is giving old Tug a pat on the head right about now as he looks down and watches over all that he created.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Impressed by his ethics & demand for perfection, honored to be taught by him, soaking up his knowledge to get it right the first time. Gerry may have been or appeared conservative but always up-to-date with the times, never naive`, & always in the spotlight at the Maupintour Gala’s. Julie you & your children are blessed to have his life stamped in to your memory as a loving husband and father. My warmest regards pour out to you and your sons during this time of great loss. Julie, Drew and Jason, I was saddened to see the Gerry had passed away. He was a great person and always made me feel welcomed in the Hammond household. He had that wonderful British accent and made those incredible crab sandwiches on muffins! He will be missed!
I work with Jason at Amarr. Moments as these are extremely difficult. I have not had the pleasure of meeting your family. Jason speaks with such admiration and compassion of his father. I can only imagine the extent of kindness and wisdom his father has contributed to his family, friends and the community. May your family find strength and peace knowing his spirit will be forever in your hearts.
