Mass of Christian Burial for Francis Eugene Born, 85, Eudora will be held at 10:00 a.m.
Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Military honors and burial to
follow in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery. He died May 10, 2010 at the Lawrence
Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 3, 1924 in St. Paul, Kansas the son of Philip Jacob and Mary Helen
(Paulie) Born.
He served his country during World War II in the US Navy where he was on the USS
Shangri-la in the South Pacific.
He worked for Farmland Industries in Lawrence for 27 years retiring in 1983. After his retirement,
he operated a small motor repair shop out of his home. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic
Church for 61 years. He was an avid fisherman.
He married Bernice Gehlen on August 10, 1948 in Colwich, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Rose Mary Lemmons and her husband, Michael of
Eudora; Joyce Lynn Vines of Lawrence; two sons, Francis Steven Born of Ottawa; Larry
Michael Born of Lawrence; two brothers, Eugene Born of Eudora; Philip Born of Napa, Idaho;
five sisters, Gertrude Hoffman of Chanute; Clara Webb of Chanute; Regina Greenlee of Lawrence;
Mary Ann Duling of Girard and Betty Roberts of Erie; seven grandchildren, Howard
and Philip “PJ” Born, Robert Lemmons, Trisha Lane, Debra Snell, Douglas Vines and Angela
Ayers; 14 great-grandchildren, one step-great grandchild and two adopted great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters and one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. at Warren-McElwain
Mortuary-Eudora Chapel on Thursday, May 13, 2010.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building
Fund or Veterans Administration and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
My deepest sympathy to you all. Eugene was a favorite patient of mine. A true representative of his “greatest generation”, what other kind of a person breaks a hip at his age cleaning a gutter. I will miss his gentle and optimistic demeanor. May he be at peace.

Sorry to see of your Dad’s passing. We think of you often and wonder how everyone are doing these days.
You must be Grandma by now… we only have a granddaughter. Sandy and family moved to Pittsburg, KS 5 years ago…miss them like crazy. Michaela is a freshman this year and does well in all subjects. She has been in voice competition for the past 3 years and gets a gold medal…singing solos…without accompaniment.
Just wanted to let you know you are thought of. Give your mom a hug from me. I always liked her.

Francis was a hard working and honest man. He had a positive influence on my life and will be greatly missed.

It’s been a very long time since I was in the Born home, and I am thankful for the kindness shared in a loving home. My fondest memory of your home, Mrs. Born, was you welcoming Debbie & I inside as we rushed home from school to enjoy your cinnamon rolls.
Today, I want to share my gratitude for Mr. Born. He worked on my dad’s (many) lawn-mowers, when we lived down the street, and even long after my family moved from Eudora. As an adult now, I can truly appreciate Mr. Born’s skill, his patience and dependability–with those machines, their owners and the children who enjoyed the grass. More than being a handy mechanic, his work is a testament to his character–a gift he shared with many.
