Eugene “Red” Sims

Graveside services for Eugene C. “Red” Sims, 43, Lawrence will be held Friday, September 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery.  He died September 21, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital of Kansas City, KS.

He was born on November 30, 1967 in Topeka, Kansas the son of Eugene Jacob Carter and Ruby Sims Redrick.  

He graduated from Topeka High in 1986.  After school he worked for Gage Bowl and then was the Chef and Manager of LaFamilia in Lawrence.

He was a member of the Indian Avenue Baptist Church.  He enjoyed bowling, fishing, listening to rap music, playing Dominos & Blackjack; and was an avid sports fan. He also became a Christian in February of 2010 and attended church regularly.

He married Claudia Toshavik on May 18, 1996 in Lawrence, KS.  She survives of the home.

Survivors include three daughters, Nadia Sims, Lawrence; Ashley Pledger, Kansas City, MO; Miranda Free, Las Vegas, NV; one son, Justin Free, Lawrence; four brothers, Michael Sims, Los Angeles, CA; Marvin Sims, Kansas City, MO; Eugene Carter, Jr., Topeka; Ted Bundy, Richmond, VA; five sisters, Debbie Sims, Kansas City, KS; Rochelle Carter; Michelle Carter, both of Topeka; Toya Carter, Richard, VA; Rhonda Pope, Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, Mylynn, Jasmine, Malachi, Aki, Massiah, Alliane, Treywyon, Keyon and Eva; and a host of aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two sons Allen Toshavik and Eugene C. Sims, Jr; his father, Eugene J. Carter and grandparents, Jimmy and Viola Simms.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Nadia Sims Educational Fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    Gene always had a smile everytime I saw him. He also taught me how to win at dominos sitting at the table during the day at La Familia. Claudia my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Gene will be missed by everyone that knew him.

    missing my cousin i think about u so much u just dont know how nuch i miss talking to u iam so glad u made it to our first family reunion the 2nd one wasnt the same without u love u big cuz debbie
