Ermal Garinger

Visitation for Ermal E. Garinger, 88, Shelbyville, Indiana will be held noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Clinton Cemetery.  He died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Ashford Place Health Campus. He was Born Sept. 27, 1922, in Marion, he was the son of Orla E. and Flora A. (Wilson) Garinger. He married Gladys Gray, and she preceded him in death in 1987. He married Betty (Owens) Dennis on Dec. 27, 1993, and she survives.  Other survivors include son, Gaylen E. Garinger of Lawrence, Kan.; brother, Bernard Garinger of Wyoming; stepsons, David (wife, Glenda) Dennis and Stephan (wife, Linda)Dennis;stepdaughter, Carol Dennis; and seven grandchildren.  He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Faith Garinger; and a daughter, Denise Garinger. Mr. Garinger graduated from Marion High School in 1940 as valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a bachelor of arts degree, then received his master of arts degree in education from Ball State University.  He was a professor at the University of Wyoming and also a professor of foreign language at the University of Kansas for 22 years, retiring in 1989. After retirement, he was a foreign language consultant for the state department of education in Kansas and served as president of Kansas Foreign Language Center. In 1989, the University of Kansas renamed its foreign language laboratory as the Ermal E. Garinger Resources Center. The university also honors a yearly schoolarship in Ermal E. Garinger honor.  Mr. Garinger was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville and also a charter member of the Lions Club in Lawrence.
