Eric Nunn Bittlingmayer

A funeral service for Eric Halden Nunn Bittlingmayer, 21, will be held 11 am, Friday, January 22, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational Church.  He died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at his home in Lawrence.

He was born September 20, 1989 in West Berlin, Germany, and moved with his family to Davis, California at the age of three months.  From a very early age he was bright eyed and cheerful, with an angelic face and a devilish smile.

In July of 2000 he and his family moved to Lawrence.  He attended Bishop Seabury Academy from 2001 to 2004, where his main interests were soccer, debate and biology.  While at Bishop Seabury he formed lifelong relationships with faculty, staff and other students.  In January 2006 he graduated from Wisdom Ranch School near Arco, Idaho. In the fall of 2007 he began his studies at the University of Kansas, majoring in biochemistry. He particularly enjoyed the study of genetics.

As an adult he had far ranging interests including travel, cycling, snowboarding, history, politics, music and spending time with his beloved dog Hercules.  Snorkeling and skydiving were not outside of his repertoire.  He read Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman three times, savored The New York Times Magazine, and avidly read The Economist.  He knew how to cook and he knew how to eat.  He thought it only natural to spend a day traversing San Francisco or Manhattan on foot, to jump into the cold Pacific, to send his older brother a bicycle in the mail, to eat half a salami over an afternoon, to meet people wherever he went, and to give generous gifts.  His soul was always full of love and void of fear.

He is survived by his parents of Lawrence and his two older brothers, Adam Mathias Nunn Bittlingmayer, San Jose, California, and Stefan Conrad Nunn Bittlingmayer, Tulsa, Oklahoma; his grandparents, John McQueen Nunn, Baldwin City, Kansas and Elizabeth Ann (Stewart) Nunn, Gulfport, Mississippi, and Theresia Bittlingmayer, Rye, New York.  In December 1988 his grandfather Jakob Bittlingmayer preceded him in death.  He is also survived by his two uncles, Richard Bittlingmayer and his wife, Patricia Damon, Tuckahoe, New York, and Helmut Bittlingmayer, Greenwich, Connecticut; his aunt, Jeanne-Marie (Nunn) Alexander and her husband, Gordon Glass Alexander, Irvine, California; and two first cousins, Gauen Rhys Alexander, Birmingham, Alabama and Ted Ryley Alexander, Irvine, California.  He is survived as well by many extended family members throughout the United States and Germany.

The family will hold a visitation from 9:30 a.m. Friday until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Eric’s name to Bishop Seabury Academy Scholarship Fund and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

I read Eric’s obituary in the January 20th Lawrence Journal-World. If he was only half as good as portrayed, I’m a)deeply sorry I never knew him and b)thinking he got as much out of his life as one can get in 21 and a fraction years. My deepest condolences.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of the loss of sweet Eric. He was a good friend to my daughter and always cordial and polite to me. He called me recently and offered condolences on the loss of my brother which I thought extremely kind and mature. I can’t imagine your pain and hope that knowing others loved your son will give you some comfort.
