Dr. James Dowell

Memorial services for Dr. James Calvin Dowell, 83, Lawrence will be held at a later date.
He died December 20, 2009 at Brandon Woods, Lawrence, Kansas. 

Dr. Dowell was born February 16, 1926 in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Dr. Raymond F. and Marie Dowell.

 He attended Elgin Academy Prep School and Northwestern University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.  He attended the University of Illinois Medical School where he received his Medical Degree in 1949 and was a member of Nu Sigma Nu Fraternity. 

He married Marilyn Lea Parkhurst in 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri at Saint Andrews Espiscopal Church.  He interned at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and he did his residency at the Kansas University Medical Center.  During the Korean War, he served as a Lieutenant at the Naval Air Station in Millington, Tennessee.  He became a fellow in the American College of Physicians in 1967, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1977.

Dr. Dowell and his family lived in Lawrence from 1956-1962 when he was in the practice of Internal Medicine with the late Dr. James Campbell.  The Dowells moved to Salina, Kansas where he practiced until 1987, when he and his wife moved to Litchfield Park, Arizona.  The Dowells returned to Lawrence in 2005.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, James and his wife, Elisabeth, Phoenix, Arizona; John and his wife, Virginia, Topeka, KS; a daughter, Diane, Boulder, Colorado; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  A daughter, Donna Foley, and her husband and two children preceded Dr. Dowell in death.

Memorials may be sent in his name to Heart of America Hospice or to St. Francis Boys Home, Inc. and may be sent in care of the Warrren-McElwain Mortuary.
