Memorial services for David Hudson Owen, 72, Baldwin City, will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, KS. David passed away at his home on Saturday, April 28, 2012.
David was born on March 8, 1940 in Bellows Falls, VT, the son of Rev. George B. and Christine (Jones) Owen.
His elementary school years were spent in Vero Beach, FL and Pittsford, VT. He graduated from Sharon High School, Sharon, MA in 1958. David graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in Geography in 1963.
David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ellyn Owen of the home; two daughters, Heather McGee (Murray), of Beloit, KS, Jennifer Bravo (Daniel) of Seattle, WA, two step-sisters, Pricilla (Robert) Muttel of Windsor, CO, Cindy Bjerre Parkinson (Ried) of Minneapolis, MN, two step-brothers, Bill Bowles (Jane) of Carmel, CA, and Don (Ginny) Bowles of La Port, MN, brother-in-law, W. Richard Evarts (Heather Eileen), Dallas, TX granddaughter, Nichole McGee, (Brett), Lawrence, KS, grandson, Nathan McGee, Hays, KS, niece, Casey Helms, (Chris), Hutto, TX, nephew, Richard C. Evarts, Dallas, TX, grand nephew, Caden Helms, TX, and great grandson, Aidan Dye, Lawrence. David is also survived by many friends and family.
David married Ellyn Evarts, June 9, 1962 in Lakewood, CO. He worked as a cartographer for General Drafting, Convent Station, NJ, making road maps and atlases for 5 years.
He then joined McGraw Hill Book Company as a college level representative, where he sold textbooks and procured manuscripts for publication. He also trained other representatives on computer applications for sales. He worked for McGraw Hill for 26 years.
David was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served for many years as co-chair of the Environmental Stewardship Team. He also was a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas’ Outreach and Mission Committee. He was the first chair of The Kansas Interfaith Power and Light, a statewide organization devoted to environmental education and advocacy. He was also a member of The Friends of Hidden Valley Girl Scout Camp, Lawrence, KS.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, 200 Maine, Suite C, Lawrence, KS 66044 or the Kansas Interfaith Power and Light, 1204 Oread Avenue, Lawrence, KS.
The earth is a better place because Dave lived here. The sky cried all day when it realized he was gone.
I knew David from exercising at LMH. He was a kind gentleman and I will miss him.
Gods comfort and peace to the family. I hope HE will give you strength during this time. I know David is in heaven with God and no more suffering.
I was saddened to receive the news today that David had passed away. Whilst I never had the privilege to meet him in person, he was always most helpful when we corresponded on the subject of family history. We had a common ancester, Joseph Booth bn 1759 in Ightham, Kent, England who was our 4x grt grandfather. My ancestors stayed in the UK whilst David related to the more adventurous line who emigrated to the States in 1849. He will be sadly missed.
I feel very fortunate to have shared a small part of Dave’s life. I enjoyed working with him on numerous car activities. He was always very enthusiastic and willing to help whenever asked. We always had a lot of fun regardless of what we were doing, whether it was working on a car or camping out. I am very pleased to say that Dave was my friend! He will be greatly missed!
Ellyn, I was sadden to hear about David. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I remember (along with many, many other things) how helpful David and you were when we were trying to decide about buying a trailer. God be with you and comfort you and the family.
Ellyn: I was saddened to hear of David’s passing. I will always think of him smiling (or perhaps smirking?) during one of our TEST adventures (e.g., those wacky canoe trips on the Kaw). What a great guy! He will be so missed by us all.
My sympathy goes out to Ellyn and the family. I knew Dave from the car club activities, and he was one of the most friendly and kind persons I know. He will be greatly missed by all.
Dave was always someone I felt at ease with and was fun to talk to about our car and automobilia hobby’s. He will be greatly missed by my club members and myself. My condolences to his family.

Dave was dear high school friend of my father’s and of our family. He was invariably kind and he and Ellyn offered us hospitality every time we were able to visit. He will certainly be missed.
David, you will be missed. I missed your smiling face at the IPL conference this year. We all did. Your passion for caring for God’s Creation was an inspiration to the many that you touched. I extend my deepest sympathies over the passing of David. It was my honor to visit over the years with David and you, first, with Kansas Land Trust matters and then on more topics of interest to all of us. I admire you both for your love of our Earthly home.
