Graveside services for Coral Jean Sheppard, 88, Lawrence will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2011 at Memorial Park Cemetery. She died Friday, November 18, 2011 at her home.
She was born February 8, 1923 in Baldwin City, KS the daughter of George Dewey and Grace (Keller) Schmitendorf.
She attended Liberty Memorial High School and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1941. She then attended Baker University, the University of Kansas and the University of Maryland.
She worked for the US Attorney’s Office Western District of Missouri and retired in 1986. After retirement she moved to Parachute, Colorado. She returned to Lawrence in 1990.
She was a former member of VFW, Volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Kaw Valley Quilters Guild.
She married William H. Sheppard on November 27, 1946 in Lawrence at the Danforth Chapel. He preceded her in death on December 27, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother George Dewey Schmitendorf, Jr. and a grandson Beau W. Sheppard and son-in-law Ronald Hobbs.
Survivors include six children, Connie Hobbs, Marshall, AR; Susan and husband, Ivan Cramer, Chandler, AZ; Joyce Tallman, Betty Jo Sheppard, John W. and wife, Linda Sheppard, and Thomas (Dick) and wife, Shirley Sheppard all of Lawrence, Kansas; a brother, James and wife, Dottie Schmitendorf, Rapid City, SD; a sister, Gloria M. and husband, John Bieloblocki, Sylva, NC; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Humane Society or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
Thinking of all of you at this difficult time. Lean on each other and it makes things easier. Betty Jo thank you for sharing your Mom with me as we were growing up.
