Betty Haile

Funeral services for Betty Jo Coulter Haile, 91, Lawrence, KS, will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday November 18, 2010 at Brenner Mortuary 114 E. 4th St. Pittsburg, KS. Burial will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS. She died Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

Mrs. Haile was born on June 3, 1919 in Pittsburg, KS, the daughter of O.E. and Blanche Hutchinson Coulter.

 
She graduated from Pittsburg High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University. She began her teaching career in 1953 at Overland Park Elementary School in Overland Park, KS. She lived in Prairie Village, KS from 1953 to 1967, when the family moved to Houston, Texas. Betty Jo continued her teaching career in Houston in the Spring Branch Independent School District. Betty Jo retired in 1982.
 
She married William L. Haile in April 1943. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage until his death in 1991.
 
Betty Jo greeted everyone with a welcoming smile and made friends instantly. Her philosophy of life can be summed up in her famous quote, “If happiness is not with me, then where will it be?” Her cheerful disposition preceded her presence whether it be friends or strangers. When Betty Jo made friends, they were life long friends.
 
Survivors include: one daughter, Judy K. Haile of Rhome, Texas; two grandchildren, Kevin P. Skridulis and wife, Mary, Overland Park, KS, and Jenny S. Vellon, and husband, Mike; one great grandson, Max Vellon, Minneapolis, MN; and brother, Kenneth Coulter of Pittsburg, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Haile; her father, O.E. Coulter, her mother Blanche Hutchinson Coulter; brother, Robert J. Coulter; sister, Ferol Coulter Haile; and her daughter, Joanna Haile Skridulis.    
 
The family will greet friends from noon until service time Thursday at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, KS.
 
The family suggests memorials in her name to the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
