Graveside services for BERNICE MARIE ALTENBERND, 83, Overland Park, KS, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, KS. She died December 24, 2012 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers memorials contributions may be made to Ivanhoe United Church of Christ 6512 Woodson Rd. Raytown, MO 64133 or to Myasthenia Gravis Association 2300 East Meyer Blvd. Suite 225 Kansas City, MO 64132.
We are going to miss your smiling face, special projects and wonderful sense of humor around here, Bernice. Things just won’t be the same without you. So glad I was able to know you, even if it was only a short time. God bless!
I visited Bernice the day before she passed, and am so grateful that I did. I massaged her feet, smoothed her forehead, and told her she was loved. She seemed so tired.
Bernice was a role model for me–feisty, adventurous, and passionate about life. She was a fount of wisdom, too. I met her at Freedom Pointe where my parents are residents. The first time I saw her, she was wearing her yellow rubber gardening boots with ladybugs on them. I thought to myself, “This is someone I need to know!” I’m so glad I took the time on several occasions to talk with her and visit with her in her room.
She had a true green thumb, and ladybugs were her emblem. I miss her very, very much, and wish so much I could have known her better. The world lost a real gem of an individual.
