Barbara Learned

Private graveside services for Barbara Creel Learned, 83, Lawrence, KS, will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.  She died on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

Barbara was born on July 8, 1929 in Hutchinson, KS the daughter of Claude and Julia (Jones) Creel.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1947 and attended the Salt Business College in Hutchinson while in high school.  She then attended the University of Kansas for three years where she majored in piano performance and home economics.  She also attended the attended the Lawrence Business College.  Later these business courses served her well when she helped put her husband through medical school.

Barbara was a homemaker and was actively involved with her husband’s medical practice. While in the Lawrence Friend’s of Music she assisted in the formation of the Lawrence Youth Symphony.  In later years, she received several 1st place blue ribbons for her Tofu recipes at the Douglas County Fair.  Barbara also was actively involved in teaching and promoting the Autoharp.

She was a member of, PEO Chapter AZ, Lawrence Music Club, Sigma Alpha Iota, Delta Gamma Sorority, and the Kansas Medical Auxiliary.

She married George Learned on September 1, 1951 in Lawrence.  He survives of the home. 

Other survivors include two daughters, Sharon Learned, Lawrence, Stephanie Sandino, Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Gabriela Sandino, Nicolas Sandino, Sofia Sandino; four first cousins, Betsy Turner, Boulder, Co, Paul (Ruth) Dillon, Hutchinson, KS, and Don (Barbara) Creel, Bartlesville, OK, Mo (Joy) Creel, Georgetown, TX; sister-in-laws, Martha Learned, Lawrence, Dixie Wheeler, Wichita, KS; brother-in-laws, Robert (Iona) Learned, Manhattan, KS, Albert (Marge) Learned, Biloxi, MS, and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials in her name to the Lawrence Humane Society or your local humane society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
