Alan “Al” Hack Jr.

Memorial Services for Alan G. Hack, Jr., 85, Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2009 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence.  Private inurnment will be at a later date.  He died on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence following complications from Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born on October 30, 1923 in Shamokin, PA, the son of Alan Grover. Sr. & Luella Derby Hack.  He and his family moved to Lawrence in 1951.

Mr. Hack graduated from Shamokin High School in 1940.  In 1948, he graduated from
Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Commerce and Finance Administration. 
At Penn State, he was the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Social Fraternity President, Lion’s Paw
Vice President, Tribunal Vice President.  He was also involved in Parma Nous, Delta
Sigma Pi, IFC, Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Penn
State varsity golf team and NCAA Golf Championship in 1948.  

He served in the U.S. 13th Army Airborne Division as Military Police Platoon.  He also
served in the 82nd Airborne Division as Technical Sergeant in Auxerre, France.

Mr. Hack was the golf club champion at Shamokin Country Club and at Lawrence Country Club.  He was a former Lawrence City golf champion.  He had two holes-in-one and a double eagle at age 12 (a two on a par 5 hole). 

Mr. Hack was a life insurance broker from 1948 – 1950 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, with  College Life Insurance Company of America. From 1950 – 1971 he was fifty percent owner and manager of The University Shop (Men’s Clothing Store) just west of the KU campus with his brother-in-law, Ken Whitenight.  He then became a bank officer with Lawrence National Bank and Trust Company from 1971 – 1981.  There he was elected Vice President in 1971, Senior Vice President, 1975 and President, 1978.  In 1981 – 1987 he was the Executive Vice President and Corporate Treasurer, Brock Hotel Corporation in Dallas, Texas.  In semi retirement from 1987 to 1988 he worked at Calvin, Eddy & Kappelman Real Estate, and 1988 – 1991 at Campbell-Becker, Inc., a venture capital management company. 

His community activities include: Moderator, Trustee, and Sr. Deacon at Plymouth Congregational Church, Chapter Advisor of Sigma Alpha Epsilon from 1951 – 1966.  United Way Drive Chair in 1968, United Way President in 1970, Kiwanis Family of the Year in 1972, Founding Director of Achievement Place for Girls in 1973, President of Lawrence Chamber of Commerce from 1975 – 1976, Warm Hearts President in 1987, Baker University Achievement in Business Award in 1995, Kiwanis Substantial Citizen Award in 1996, Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1999, Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 1999 and the CornerBank Community Cornerstone Award in 2005. 

He was married to Julie Seashore on January 24, 1947 in State College, PA.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, Alan G.III, (wife, Sue) of Lawrence, Bill, (wife, Michelle) of Lawrence, Chris, (wife, Dana) of Greer, South Carolina, a daughter, Cary Danielson Pandzik,( husband, Mike) of Lenexa, KS; one brother-in-law, Ken Whitenight, Lawrence; one sister, Louise Stump, Pensacola, Florida; nine grandchildren, Eric Danielson, Julie Danielson, Brian Hack, Anne Hack, Wilson Hack, Weston Hack, Hudson Hack, Bailey Hack and Reagan Hack.  Great grandchildren include; Hank and Josie Danielson.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William and sister, Ethel Hack Whitenight. 

The family suggests memorials in his name to the Warm Hearts of Douglas County, or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
