Ada Torneden

Funeral service for Ada Maxine Torneden, 88, Lawrence, will be held at 10 a.m. July 31, 2009, at Central United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow Oak Hill Cemetery.  Mrs. Torneden died July 23, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 13, 1921, in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank E. and Elma N. (Rhodes), Bryan.

Ada worked at Weavers Department Store for 26 years as a sales associate.  She retired in 1990.  Before working at Weavers Department Store, she was a homemaker.  Ada was a member of the PTA, served as the PTA president.  She was a Girl Scout Leader and a Leader of the 4-H.  Ada was a volunteer at Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, a member of the local card club and a member of the Central United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was involved with United Methodist Women. She enjoyed camping, politics and Tuesday morning poker.

She married Elmer Leroy Torneden on December 31, 1942, in Kansas City, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on June 14, 2001.

Survivors include one daughter, Annette Dietz, Lawrence; two brothers, Richard Bryan, Lawrence, Lawrence Bryan, Ottawa; five grandchildren, Clayton, Kristin, Kim, Anna, Kit; and eight great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two daughters, Karen Hunter and Pat Steffens; four brothers, Paul, Harold, Bob, and William; one sister, Jean.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Central United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army and sent in care of the mortuary.
