Marc was born February 15, 1950, in Lansing, MI, the son of Ernest and Virginia (Hoover) Mahlios. At the age of 3, his family moved to Phoenix, AZ, mostly to escape Michigan winters. He graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1968 and it was there that he met his future wife, Jan Ralston. He attended Arizona State University receiving BAs in Sociology and Elementary Education, an MA in Education and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction.

He taught for 4 years in grades 5-8 while completing his graduate degrees. Marc began his university teaching career at Fort Hays State University in 1978. That career went on to take him and his family to the State University of New York, Binghamton, the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, the University of Colorado at Denver, the University of Florida, Gainesville, and finally to KU from which he retired in 2016.

Marc married Jan Ralston on July 4, 1970, in Scottsdale, AZ, and she survives at the home. Other survivors include his children, Erin (Edward) Carroll, Overland Park, Emily Mahlios, Overland Park, Josh (Felicia Hawthorne) Mahlios, San Diego, five grandchildren, Olivia, Elizabeth, Catherine, Theodore, and Isadora, sister Michele (Tom) Brouse, Glendale, AZ, and brother Randy, FL.

Marc Mahlios savored life. Whether it was a perfectly mowed lawn, a carefully selected bottle of wine or the best recording of a particular opera, he could discern and appreciate a thing well done. His generosity of spirit motivated him to not just enjoy a perfect thing, but to make it complete, he had to share it with others.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Marc’s name to Plymouth Congregational Church’s Music Ministry and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
