  4. Jill Baker, retired Cottonwood Inc. Administrator of Services on November 26, 2022 at 12:29 pm

Judy’s contributions to Cottonwood, Inc. are significant and I, along with all of her colleagues who worked with her, are so saddened by her passing. She was a great ambassador for Cottonwood and served on the Cottonwood, Inc. Board of Trustees for a number of years before becoming the first Director of Community Relations and Development in the early 80s. As such, she was instrumental in starting the Cottonwood Foundation, effectively seeding what was to become the important fund raising arm of Cottonwood which was designed to support the mission of Cottonwood services. All these years later her legacy, so to speak, along with the vision of the Board and the then CEO, Howard Hasler, has provided much needed funding to Cottonwood’s direct services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Judy was, and will always be, Lawrence royalty and she introduced many friends and contacts to Cottonwood’s services. She started a very successful run of the Kansas Open Golf tournament that again was a first of its kind for Cottonwood. Judy was gracious, charming, beautiful, regal, and caring. She stayed in touch for years until her health became a factor I believe. I am sorry for your loss and I hope your memories bring you comfort. She was one of a kind!

  11. Judy Harkins on November 27, 2022 at 11:52 pm

Dear Kenneth, Bret and her relatives and your families. Joe told me that he had read in today’s paper of Judy’s death and I then read the article and felt such sadness. There were some so good times I remember at her home and seeing her often during the years as we saw each other in the community ~ Judy always so pleasant, thoughtful, cordial and engaging. I did reflect today about her kindnesses and how she enjoyed her family and many interests and involvements. Unfortunately I had not connected with Judy for some years so the memories of her are very special. We send to you our sympathy and caring, Joe and Judy Harkins

Cottonwood was very fortunate that Judy was essentially the first Director of the Cottonwood Foundation, the fund raising arm of Cottonwood, Inc. Judy was on the Board of Trustees when the foundation was envisioned and, along with the then CEO Howard Hasler, was instrumental in setting the direction of the foundation. She also shepherded in the first Kansas Open Golf Tournament which was an important fundraiser for Cottonwood at that time. She was regal, gracious, beautiful, charming, and caring. So sorry for her passing. For Cottonwood she is a gift that keeps on giving. We will miss her.
