Funeral services for John George Young, 83, Lawrence will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. He died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
John was born August 11, 1930 in Barnsdall, OK the son of Somers and Eliza (Davis) Young. He was from the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.
John served his country in the United States Air Force as a Medic in the Korean War.
He received his Associates Degree from Northern Oklahoma College.
He was a Dorm Supervisor at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence.
He married Clara Ann Willison on January 19, 1957 in Pawhuska, OK. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, JoEllen Young, Pawhuska, OK, Julia Kay Teel and husband, Mark, Lawrence; two sons, Jimmie Dean Sandusky, Terlton, OK, John Walter Young, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Johnnie Ann Young-Fields; one sister, Sue Beth Young; and one brother Somers James “Jim” Young in 2010.
The family will greet friends from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorial in his name to the Lawrence Humane Society or The American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
John was a dear sweet man whom I had the honor of knowing. Even though I am not family he always treated me as if I was. Heaven has gained a wonderful man. To the young family please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
I had not yet met John W, but such an honor to hear of his legacy at his memorial service on Monday. My sincere condolences to your family.
