Sherry Ann Girty was born December 31, 1966 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She left this earth on March 7, 2014 at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center. Sherry is the daughter of Andy and Frances Girty. Born and raised in Lawrence Kansas, Sherry attended: Broken Arrow Elementary, Cordley Elementary, Central Junior High School and graduated with the class of 1985 from Lawrence High School. Sherry is an Alumni of Haskell Indian Junior College and Pinnacle Career College. She is survived by her son Christopher M. Bowers of Lawrence, her parents Andy and Frances Girty of Lawrence, brother Gary and wife Loa Girty of Piedmont OK, brother Steve Girty of Lawrence, and twin sister Kerry and husband Rich Cuny of Okinawa Japan. Followed by three nephews (Logan, Garrett and Walker Girty) and one great niece (Jaeylyn Girty) all of Oklahoma and many friends whom she called family.
Sherry began her career at Haskell Indian Nations University as an Admissions Clerk in the Registrars office. She then took a one-year stint with the Agua Caliente Band of the Cajuilla Indians in Palm Springs, California. Sherry was always drawn back to her hometown and the Haskell Community. Sherry then finished her career, retiring from Haskell in 2013, having served over 20 years with the federal government.
Sherry was active with many organizations throughout the Lawrence and Haskell community, including:

Haskell Fast-Pitch Softball Committee
Veterans Coordinator in the Admissions and Records Office
Lawrence Chamber of Commerce member
Haskell Off-Campus Club Advisor
Toys for Tots-Contributor for Haskell
Spearheaded the Adopt a Homeless Angel Christmas Gift
Veterans Supporter
Wrote letters to active duty native warriors
Advocate for Native Veterans
Cooridinated Warrior Moccasin Project
She also belonged to the LIUMC and served on the Board as the Secretary and PPRC member.
Sherry was not only active in participating in activities in the community but she was also a Facebook “Super-star” who enjoyed staying in contact with her friends and family, and even making new friends. Everyone will miss the wonderful Happy Birthday messages she would post, along with inspiring words, and taco sale announcements.
We will all miss her loving smile, and her willingness to help others. May she fly with all other Angels in heaven. We love you and look forward to seeing you again sister!
Sherry’s struggle has ended but her Spirit of strength, perseverence and faith will remain with us. May she now rest with the Angels and her family be at peace with their Love for her.
Ms. Girty..May you rest in peace. I pray that the good Lord guides your family through this hard time and gives them strength.

Frances & Andy (and family), we want you to know that we are thinking about you. We were saddened by the news of Sherry. She was a wonderful, loving young lady and I know she will be dearly missed by those who got to know her. May God place his arms around all of you and give you the strength and comfort and courage to get through these times. God bless all of you and you are all in our prayers.

For our Haskell Sister, friend and fellow Sister in Christ, Sherry Pakpvkuce Girty. Thank you for always helping the children every year with the Christmas Fund drive, so that they would have presents and a meal. I admired you for your love of God. Thank you for always supporting the Haskell Veterans and lastly thank you for being a friend to me when I was so far away from home and for all the other students that you helped who came to Haskell. Your kindness, generosity and love for all the Haskell Family will forever be remembered! You have earned your Angel wings, fly…fly…fly! We will miss you!
My prayers and songs lifted up for Sherry’s journey home
Sherry will be celebrating a new birthday in God. She will be greeted & reunited with old family members and friends. What a big gathering of joy & love that will be. She no longer will be in pain or suffering. Sherry was a light. Her spirit was love, kindness, giving. She cared for people. She had such compassion for our soldiers. The Lord blessed us with her. She touched so many, many lives. She celebrated life to the fullest. Love & comfort to her son, parents, relative and friends. She will be missed. Sherry, until we see you again REST IN PEACE.

Francis and Andy, I’ve been looking for your phone number so I can call but to no avail so I was so glad to see this. I want you to know that Sherry was well loved. She was a loving caring soul. Everyone enjoyed her postings on Facebook and she truly cared for hurting people around her. Be blessed in knowing this about her. She was very proud of her son as well. We know you are hurting but God’s love is deeper. Let the love of God hold you and keep you always. We love you and will continue to hold you in our prayers. May she rest in peace!

I can not ever remember Sherry without a smile on her face. What a kind gentle person and long time friend. You will be missed.

I have thought of Sherry often over the years. As I put together care packages for our brave soldiers overseas. Sherry’s care operations for donations, card and pen pal correspondence was the first I joined. Sherry’s kindness and compassion for others made a long lasting impact on me. As well as for great love for her son Christopher and loving family members. My thoughts and prayers are with you today and always.

Sherry I will miss visiting with you on FB. I loved your bright comments and funny sayings and pictures. I will also miss your love for God that you expressed so sincerely.
My heart is heavy for your loss. Sherry out shined any cloud that tried to darken her days. All we can do is thank the good lord that he gave her bright spirit to us even for too short a while. I also ask that God will guide you through the empty days ahead.
Sherry worked for me years and years ago. I thought she was wonderful back then and have never thought anything but great things about her since. I was so touched back then when she invited me to her graduation…and will never forget the shout-out she got when her name was called. I was also honored to be one of her job references.
We lost touch over the years, but I have never stopped thinking fondly of her, and am so sad and sorry to learn of her passing. My heart goes out to all of you.

To the Girty Family: Growing up with your family is like losing a sister. I’m sorry that I can’t be there physically but I am there in spirit. Knowing that Sherry was having health problems, I know now that she is in a better place. Will be keeping you in my prayers.
My year in Lawrence Kansas was blessed by my true friend in Christ. Sherry stepped up and extended the hand of friendship and welcomed me into her life. My best memories include Sherry and Chris. Though our lives were separated by our distance, I have always felt a deep bond with Sherry. May God bless Sherry’s family and the extended family that dots the earth. The loss is hard not to have the physical Sherry but as we pray for strength the spirituality of Sherry will be with to give us strength. I so sorry I only found out two weeks later.
