Memorial services for Brian Christopher Johnson, 35, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December, 13, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. He entered life eternal on Monday, December 9, 2013 at the University of Kansas Medical Center after an extended illness.
Brian was born May 21, 1978 in Hinsdale, IL the son of O. Franklin Johnson and Joyce Gerwing.
He was in active duty in the Kansas National Guard and had been on deployments in Egypt and Africa.
He was a graduate of Indiana Business College and was currently a student at the University of Phoenix and would have graduated in May in Criminology.
He loved his family and enjoyed watching football and gaming.
He married Heather Christine Shire on October 29, 2010 in Manhattan, KS. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his parents; one daughter, Alexandra “Alex” “Munchkin” Johnson; sons, Austin-James Michael Welborn, Colby Lee “Cub” Bailey Welborn; one sister, Heather, E. Brown and husband, Jim; brother, Eric A. Johnson and wife, Bethany; nieces, Ashley “Spud” Brown-Aker, Taryn Johnson; nephew, Alan Johnson; brother-in-laws, R.J. Patrick, Joshua Shire; mother-in-law, LeeAnn Shire; and father-in-law, Michael Shire.
The family will greet friends Thursday from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the mortuary and again on Friday before the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials in his name to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516 or may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
To the family of Brian,
I’m sorry for you loss, I met Brian a couple of times on Fort Riley. He seemed like a good man from meeting him and from what coworkers said. I pray for comfort for you all with the loss of Brian. He will be forever in your hearts and minds.
Admittedly, it has been a long time since I’d seen Brian, but I went to high school with him and remember him fondly. My very sincere condolences to his family. Please know that even his distant friends wish you all the best and will pray for you to find strength and serenity to carry you through the grief.
I am so sorry for your loss. Brian was truly good people. So freakin’ funny and fun, he brought joy with him wherever he went. He had a strong heart and fought so valiantly. Know that you and your family are on our minds here in Indy. He will be missed.

I am saddened to hear of your loss and pray that God lifts you up and gives you strength as you had given me in the past. I believe that your son having served his country was a true hero and my wish for you is that you find comfort and healing in that way as well. May God lift his countenance upon your family and give you peace.
