A Memorial gathering for Maud Gonne Humphrey, 51, Lawrence will be held from
2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 1301 Rhode Island Street in Lawrence. Maud died February 1, 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Maud was born on November 21st, 1960 in Norwalk, Connecticut, the daughter of Henry B. Humphrey and Deirdre O’Meara Humphrey. She went to grade school in Weston, Connecticut, then attended George Washington University, Portland School of Art, and Kansas University, where she will be receiving her BA degree in American Studies this spring.
She was awarded the Undergraduate Research Grant in American Studies this semester, and was recently urged by the department to join their masters program. Unfortunately, these plans were cut short by her untimely passing. Prior to moving to Lawrence in 1988, Maud worked as a photojournalist in Westport, Connecticut. Lawrence became, in her words, her spiritual home. She became an inspiration to the Lawrence community.
Maud worked for her last twelve as the office manager of KU’s Art History Department, where she was widely loved and respected for her steadfastness, her dry humor, and her extraordinary energy. She was fierce and compassionate in her understanding of humanity and justice. Maud was very serious in her pursuits; by consistently sweeping her family and friends into the intensity of her own life, she compelled them to come up in themselves, in order to keep up with her.
She married Keith Charles (Kc) Stanton on November 24th, 2006 in Lawrence. He survives of the home.
Survivors include one son, Walter Anton Morris, Chicago IL; four sisters, Nora Humphrey Logan, Brooklyn, NY; Eloise Wolfe Humphrey, Brunswick, ME; Daphne O’M Comaskey, Brunswick, ME; Deirdre Weedy Humphrey, Lawrence, KS; her mother, Deirdre O’M Humphrey; three nieces and three nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Lawrence Humane Society.
I enjoyed Maud when I worked with her on the Employee Recognition Committee with her. My condolences to those she leaves behind.

Eloise, Daphne, Weedy and Maud’s nieces and nephews,
Words cannot express the shock and sadness that all of us in the KU art history department feel at the loss of our dear Maud, who was such a vital and essential presence in our lives and work for the last twelve years. Her absence leaves a void in our hearts that can never be filled but we will always remember her with tremendous love and gratitude. Our thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

I was shocked to see the obituary today. Maud was an amazing person, for whom I had the highest regard and respect. I will miss her so much! She was unusual, a loving and empathetic person, so intelligent and warm. We became friends at our first meeting about 14 months ago, and I admired her and so did other friends I introduced to her. Farewell dear one, and thank you for your inspiring life. I’m a better person and it’s a better world, for having known you.
Dear Kc, and all of Maud’s family and loved ones, in such a sad time it is hard to find words. Maud was a lady of the highest human potential. She was so generous and loving – I’m grateful to have known her. My heart goes out to you all. I know we will all continue to honor her memory for the rest of our lives. Goodbye, dear Maud.
My condolences to family and friends. I do not yet have words to express the sadness I feel at Maud’s shadow turning to light, but she will live in my heart for a long time and continue to inform our world.

My condolences to the Humphrey family. I wish I had had the chance to meet Maud, she was very much loved and respected by many people! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
I will always remember Maud’s infectious smile, her wicked sense of humor, and her outspoken honesty. She brightened every life she touched. My deepest sympathies to her family.

I am SO sorry to hear this. I just now found out, or I would have been there on Sunday. What a sweet person Maud was. I am stunned that she is gone. My heart goes out to her family.
I was stunned to hear the news of Maud’s passing. As was her way, she would never have focused on, or told anyone that she was not feeling well. My deepest sympathies to KC and Maud’s family. I got to know her when we both lived in Westport, CT, and I will always treasure the time we spent together.
Terribly sorry to hear about Maud’s passing, knew her for years…in weston, we were classmates. She truly was an extraordinary person. May she rest in peace. My sincerest condolances to her family. Well keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

To all of the Humphreys, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am only just learning of this today…You might remember me as the Carol whose grandmother lived across the road in the summers. The fondest memories of my entire childhood were those of Weston, in the summers, and wonderful Maude, I can still remember her quite vividly, and all of you in that house, are a big part of those memories. Hey Maud, you silly girl. You up and died on me. Man, I still have the gluez, and it won’t come off ( like you told me ). You, my dear, were one in a million lifetimes of fun. Yeah, you were beautiful and nice and all that, but you were also crafty and shifty, and you cracked me up. The amount of love involved here is beyond words. You psycho-motor-phenomenon(your word). I’m saddened to learn about Maud’s passing. She was so bright and fun. We went to high school together in Connecticut and grew up in the same two towns, Westport and Weston. She used to really like to banter in a very challenging, smart and humorous way. I saw her later at one of our reunions and was glad to know that she was so happy out in Kansas.
My sympathies to all who loved her. She really was something else.
