Dorlos John Gammill
Born: August 15, 1927
Died: September 14, 2009
Dorlos was born in Newnata, Arkansas and spent his early years in Big Springs and Pleasant Hill, Arkansas. Elementary school was in a one room school house in Pleasant Hill, Arkansas. He married Geneve Perry on October 18, 1944.
Times were rough as the country was recovering from the “Great Depression”. Dorlos worked at many odd jobs (as many others did in those times) to make a living and put food on the table. He and his wife traveled to many states in search of work. They lived in California, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma.
In the mid 1950’s, the family moved to Eudora, Kansas, to work for the Hercules Powder plant. When the plant closed, he moved to the greater Kansas City area where he worked for Safeway Stores for 25 years without ever missing a days’ work. After his retirement, he and his wife moved back to Eudora, Kansas. In Eudora, he worked for his friend Jack Brewer and loved his job. He was a people person. He loved people and they loved him in return.
His health began to fail in 2007. He had many disappointments in his personal life and he handled all upsets with dignity and faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Lula Gammill. Survivors include his wife, Geneve (Perry) Gammill, Paola, Kansas; daughter, Janice and Bob Freeman, Olathe, Kansas; sons, Danny Gammill, Shawnee, Kansas, Kevin Gammill, Paola, Kansas; sister, Lorene & Dewey Richardson, Eudora, Kansas, seven grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary-Eudora Chapel. Burial will follow in Eudora Cemetery. Family will greet friends an hour before the service.
The family suggest memorial in his name to American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
