A Memorial Mass for Don C. Welter, 78, Lawrence will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Lawrence. Burial will follow in Grantville Cemetery, Grantville, Kansas. Mr. Welter died Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Don was born November 2, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Charles and Belle Frandle
Welter. He was a 1948 graduate of Liberty Memorial High School and attended the University of Kansas. He was a former member of the Kansas National Guard.
He was both a Branch Manager and General Agent for Transamerica Occidental Life
for over 40 years, in Topeka, Kansas City, Kansas and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Don was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters for over 50 years.
He was also a member of the Ex-Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a founding member of the Blue Birds Baseball Team of Lawrence.
He married Nancy Dean on Sept. 16, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He married Shirley
Jo Brown on Aug. 10, 1968 in Topeka, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2006.
He is survived by three daughters: Cindy Ford and her husband Jim of Lawrence, KS, Debbie Toms, Lawrence, KS. and Linda Craig and her husband John of Olathe, KS.; one step son, David Brown and wife, Sally and one step daughter Debbie Roberts and her husband Frank, all of Topeka; six grandchildren: Molly Ford, Ashley Ford Plantz, Jarrod and Travis Toms, and Casey and Spencer Craig; two great grandchildren: Rian Toms and Conner Plantz; and four step grandchildren: Jenna Watson, Kevin Brown, Jamie Kapella and Justin Roberts.
A Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church with visitation to follow. Memorials in his name may be made to the Oncology Department at Lawrence Memorial Hospital or to the American Cancer Society and
sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
