George Moyer

George Arthur Moyer, 59, Baldwin City, Kansas, passed from this life on Thursday, August 25, 2011, of heart disease. George was born August 23, 1952, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Edward and Marion (Martin) Moyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edward Moyer, and his sister Beverly Van Lake, both of Denver.

George graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, and attended Metro State College, both in Denver. He has worked in the Denver printing trades, at The Denver Public Library, at Wild Oats in Denver, and at Vangent in Lawrence, Kansas. He worked at Student Financial Aid Services, Inc. in Lawrence, at the time of his death.

George was a talented drummer, and was one of the founders of Dragonfest, an annual spiritual gathering in the Rocky Mountains. George and his beloved spouse, Donna Rhiannon Asher, joined their lives together on August 14, 1992, in the mountains of Colorado. They published the magazine “Hole in the Stone” from 1992 to 1996. They moved from Denver to the Kansas City area in March of 2000.

George had a quirky sense of humor and a great appreciation for pop culture, and was a fan of Zippy the Pinhead — going so far as to get a tattoo of Zeep and Peep on his forearm. George loved books and words and was an avid collector of both. He was a great fan of the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, and had incredibly diverse musical tastes. He loved riding his motorcycle. George was a longtime peace activist and was a member of the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice. He was a wonderful storyteller and had a large and loyal circle of friends.

George is survived by his wife Rhiannon (Donna), of the home; stepdaughters Tammy Oliver (Colorado Springs, Colorado), Rhonda Orback (Arvada, Colorado), and Dawn Vandegrift (Lawrence, Kansas); grandchildren Ashlyn Candelaria and Alexandria Orback (Arvada), Brandon and Kaeli Oliver (Colorado Springs), Sage and Zoey Crooks, of the home; and great-granddaughter Karter Candelaria (Arvada). Also surviving are uncle, Billy Martin, and aunt, Elizabeth “Pat” Hurt (Denver), and numerous nieces and nephews, including Wendi and Brittany Van Lake, Carissa Harrod, and Jon Moyer (all of Denver).

Memorial Services will be held Saturday September 3rd, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at The Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 North 1100 Road, Lawrence, Kansas, and Wednesday September 7th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Foothills Chapel, 1950 Ford Street, Golden, Colorado.

The family suggests memorial donations be sent to Doctors Without Borders or Greenpeace and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
