Helen Cross

Funeral services for Helen Marie Cross, 80, Lawrence will be held 5 p.m., Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.  She died June 28, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Helen was born on February 24, 1931 in near Barnard, KS the daughter of Otto and Lillian Hickey Nitsch.  

She owned Helen’s Coiffures and worked as an active hair dresser for over 60 years, beginning at the age of 14.                           

She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. 

She married James Kenneth “Jim” Cross on May 7, 1967 in Colorado Springs, CO.  He preceded her in death on November 29, 2003. 

Survivors include three daughters, Julie Hauer, Hacienda Heights, CA, Mary McClacherty,
N. Olmsted, OH, Sheri Inez Cross Pfeifer, Lawrence, KS; one son, James W. Snell, Overland Park, KS; 12 grandchildren, Matthew, and Amy Snell, Jonathan, and Shawn Hauer, Loni Hill, Craig Hauer, Amanda, Sarah, and John C. McClacherty, Justine, Jared, and Matthew Cross, Steven Pfeifer, and Kyndal Lily Turner; six great grandchildren, Mallori and Emily Snell, Tanner Chapin, Tyler, Cossette and Charles Hauer; and two sisters, Lily Peck, Lawrence, KS, and Mary Thomas, Junction City, KS.  She was also preceded in death by two sons, Jay Alfred Cross March 4, 2009 and Dustin Bridges in 1996.

The family will receive friends from 4 – 5 p.m. until the service at the mortuary.

    My sincerest condolances on the loss of your mother. She was a great model of how to go on with adversity. I worked with her at Charlie Girl in 1980. There should be more like her.

    To Julie and all Helen’s family, please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your mother and grandmother.

    I am Mark Campbell’s sister.and Dr. Keller’s mother. Julie has had a chance to renew acquaintances with Dr. John, so he called me Friday to tell me about Helen. You all will be in my prayers. I know Helen will be missed!
