Dr. Lucile Paden, PhD

Dr. Lucile Y. Paden PhD, 89, beloved daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and even in-law, rejoined her husband of 65 years on Wednesday evening April 13.  Memorial services will be Sat. June 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.  A celebration of her life will follow the service with a light lunch served.

She was born October 27, 1921 to Elizabeth Aberle York and Oscar Thomas York at their home near Sibleyville, KS.  She attended Blue Mound Grade School, Vinland High School and Oread High School.  She enjoyed archery, dancing, and drama.  She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics.

She married Glen Paden on December 20, 1942 and raised four children; encouraging them to explore, learn about, and care for the world around them.  Her home was often filled with critters from the natural world.  She helped organize the neighborhood into play groups that met at different homes each day to learn a skill from that home’s mother.  After her children were all in school, she returned to school to earn a MS and a PhD in Human Development and Family Life.  In the process, she pioneered a method of measuring attending behavior in infants.  After graduation, she taught at Maple Woods CC and Ottawa University before going to work for the Kansas State Department of Education as the Coordinator of Early Childhood Education Programs.  While there, she facilitated acquisition of federal education money, Kansas Legislature support, and local implementation of the Early Childhood Intervention programs across the state.

Both Lucile’s parents preceded her in death as did three brothers, James, Frederick, and Raymond.  Surviving her are three sisters; Francis Abbott, New Jersey, Millie Cooper, and Alita Cooper, Lawrence, and one brother, Frank York, Olathe.  She is survived by four children who have all followed her lead entering helping professions; Rabeth Meikle, RN of Lewiston, NY, Philip Paden, MD of Ashland, OR, David Paden, MS in Education of Lawrence, and Becca Lipnick, OTR/L of Farmington, NM. She is further survived by seven grandchildren; Bert, Heather, and Christine of Lewiston, NY, James of Fredericksburg, VA, Aaron and John of Lawrence, and Joshua of Farmington, NM; as well as eight great grandchildren; Alex, Sophia, Emma, Elijah, Arlo, Elliot, Oscar and Eagan.

Memorials may be sent to Warren-McElwain Mortuary designated for The Haiti Water Project, United Child Development Fund, or Planned Parenthood.

Lucy was a valued colleague during the early days of the KU Infant Research Laboratory. She made significant contributions to our work and was a co-author on the article that first described the ’infant control’ procedure for studying infant visual attention. Condolences to all of her family. She will be well remembered. Frances
