Stephen Clark Kirk

Stephen Clark Kirk died January 26, 2014, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Baldwin City, Kansas. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

He was born to Meldon C. Kirk and Carrie Mae (Klinkenberg) Kirk at the Atchison Hospital in Atchison, Kansas on August 6, 1957. Due to Downs Syndrome and complications at birth, he had profound developmental disabilities. He spent much of his early life at Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka, Kansas. On October 20, 1992, he moved into a group home in the community managed by Cottonwood, Inc. in Lawrence, Kansas, where he remained until he entered hospice care at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Baldwin City, Kansas.

Stephen is survived by his parents who reside in Overland Park, Kansas, and his brother, David C. Kirk of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Lawrence A. Kirk of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by a niece, Mallory Kirk, and three nephews: Wiley, Van, and Walker Kirk.

Stephen’s family is very thankful for the excellent care and assistance he received from KNI, Cottonwood, Baldwin Healthcare and several Kansas State Agencies.

The family suggests memorials in his name to Cottonwood, Inc. or Baldwin City Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
