Maria Rood

A Graveside Service for Maria Rood, 92, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2018 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. She passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Maria was born June 10, 1925 in Munich, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Elizabeth (Mückel) Winklmeier.

She was a homemaker, and worked as a radiology aide at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for many years until she retired.

She married Robert “Bob” Rood on July 28th, 1952 in Munich, Germany. Bob was stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Germany when they met. After Maria and Bob married, they moved to Lawrence, Kansas, as Bob was from the area. Never having any children of their own, their dogs Tiger, Poncho, and Sambo filled that place in their heart. Together they enjoyed fishing and watching a good game of baseball. Robert preceded her in death on October 19th, 1978.

Throughout her life, Maria enjoyed spending time in her garden, sewing outfits for her nieces, knitting gifts for her family and crocheting clothes for her vintage Barbie dolls that her great nieces played with. Surprisingly, as a German woman, her favorite food was Mexican.

Maria and Bob will be inurned together at the time of Maria’s services on Friday.

Survivors include her two sisters-in-laws, Rosemarie Winklmeier of Lawrence, and June Hauptli of Colorado. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Contributions may be made in her name to The Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
